In recent years the island has been establishing a real reputation for supreme wine qualities. There are two distinct wine growing areas, one being Binissalem. The Binissalem vineyards are located in the heart of the island and cover an area of 560 hectares. Perhaps one of the best known wine producers in Mallorca is Bodega de Jose Luis Ferrer, situated on the southern tip of Binissalem. (photos: vineyards - Jose Luis Ferrer and Jaume De Puntiro).
Mallorca counts several indigenous grapes. The Callet and Manto Negro are the red varieties, the Moll, also called Prensal (or Premsal) Blanc is the white one. There are however great difficulties with the Mallorcan grapes, they are hard to grow and oxidize easily, they therefore grow a number of imported varieties, "Cabernet is fantastic, Syrah is easy, but Manto Negro is difficult. It takes to the character of the land very well, but it's like a wild animal, savage, and you have to educate it."
